1910-1973. British film actor, usually cast
in authoritarian roles. His films include The
Cruel Sea 1953, The League of Gentlemen 1959,
Zulu 1963, Waterloo 1970. After 1966 his
voice had to be dubbed following an operation
for throat cancer that removed his vocal
chords.
