director. He was director of the Royal
Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-on-Avon
1960-68 and developed the Royal Shakespeare
Company as director 1968-73 until appointed
director of the National Theatre 1973-88,
succeeding Laurence Olivier. His productions
include Waiting for Godot 1955, The Wars of
the Roses 1963, The Homecoming stage 1967 and
film 1973, and Amadeus 1979. He was also
appointed artistic director of opera at
Glyndebourne 1984, with productions of Carmen
1985 and Albert Herring 1985-86.
