1927-1981. US pioneer of rock and roll who
was originally a western-swing musician. His
songs `Rock Around the Clock' 1954 (recorded
with his group the Comets and featured in the
1955 film Blackboard Jungle) and `Shake,
Rattle and Roll' 1955 became the anthems of
the early rock-and-roll era.
