European royal family, former imperial house
of Austria-Hungary. The name comes from the
family castle in Switzerland. The Habsburgs
held the title Holy Roman emperor 1273-91,
1298-1308, 1438-1740, and 1745-1806. They
ruled Austria from 1278, under the title
emperor 1806-1918.
