1906-1987. US film director, screenwriter,
and actor. An impulsive and individualistic
filmmaker, he often dealt with the themes of
greed, treachery, human relationships, and
the loner. His works as a director include
The Maltese Falcon 1941 (his debut), The
Treasure of the Sierra Madre 1947 (for which
he won an Academy Award), The African Queen
1951, and Prizzi's Honor 1984. He was the son
of the actor Walter Huston and the father of
the actress Anjelica Huston. His other films
include Moby Dick 1956, The Misfits 1961, Fat
City 1972, and The Dead 1987.
