1827-1910. English painter, one of the
founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood
1848. Obsessed with realistic detail, he
travelled from 1854 onwards to Syria and
Palestine to paint biblical subjects. His
works include The Awakening Conscience 1853
(Tate Gallery, London) and The Light of the
World 1854 (Keble College, Oxford).
