1871-1955. US Democratic politician, born in Tennessee. He was a member of Congress 1907-33, and, as F D Roosevelt's secretary of state 1933-44, he opposed German and Japanese aggression. He was identified with the Good Neighbour Policy of non-intervention in Latin America. In his last months of office he paved the way for a system of collective security, for which he was called `father' of the United Nations. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace 1945.
