1793-1863. US general who won Texas'
independence from Mexico 1836 and was
president of the Republic of Texas 1836-45.
Houston, Texas, is named after him. Houston
was governor of the state of Tennessee and
later US senator for and governor of the
state of Texas. He took Indian citizenship
when he married a Cherokee.
