producer and actor, born in Romania. He
co-founded the Mercury Theater with Orson
Welles, and collaborated with Welles and
Nicholas Ray as directors. He won an Academy
Award for his acting debut in The Paper Chase
1973, and re-created his role in the
subsequent TV series.
