made characterful studies of Voltaire and a
Neo-Classical statue of George Washington,
commissioned 1785. His other subjects
included the philosophers Diderot and
Rousseau, the composer Gluck, the emperor
Napoleon, and the American politician
Benjamin Franklin. Houdon also produced
popular mythological figures, such as Diana
and Minerva.
