1836-1882. English philosopher. He attempted
to show the limitations of Herbert Spencer
and John Stuart Mill, and advocated the study
of Kant and Hegel. His chief works are
Prolegomena to Ethics 1883 and Principles of
Political Obligation 1895. He was professor
of moral philosophy at Oxford from 1878.
