A religious revival in the American colonies
from the late 1730s to the 1760s, sparked off
by George Whitefield (1714-1770), an
itinerant English Methodist preacher whose
evangelical fervour and eloquence made many
converts. A second `great awakening' occurred
in the first half of the 19th century,
establishing the evangelist tradition in US
Protestantism.
