1879-1976. Irish-born architect and furniture
designer. She set up her own workshop and
became known for her Art Deco designs which,
in furniture, explored the use of tubular
metal, glass, and new materials such as
aluminium. She trained as a painter at the
Slade School of Art, London, then worked for
a Japanese lacquer painter in Paris. She
gradually concentrated on the design of
furniture, woven textiles, and interiors.
