1904-1948. Armenian-born US painter, who lived in the USA from 1920. He painted Cubist abstracts before developing a more surreal Abstract-Expressionist style, using organic shapes and bold paint strokes. Among Gorky's major influences were Picasso, Kandinsky, Miro, and Cezanne. His works, such as The Liver Is the Cock's Comb 1944, are noted for their sense of fantasy.
