1953- . English cricketer who plays for Essex county and England. He made his first-class cricket debut in 1973 followed by his first appearance for the England team 1975. Banned for three years for captaining a team for a tour of South Africa in 1982, he was later re-instated as England captain in 1989. He scored a world record 456 runs in a Test match against India in 1990. He became the fourth man to average 100 runs per innings in an English season and has appeared in more than 80 Test matches.
