1903-1974. US surgeon who invented the
heart-lung machine in 1953. It has become
indispensable in heart surgery, maintaining
the circulation while the heart is
temporarily inactivated.

Lewis Grassic. Pen name of James Leslie 
Mitchell 1901-1935. Scottish novelist, author 
of the trilogy A Scots Quair: Sunset Song, 
Cloud Howe, and Grey Granite 1932-34, set in 
the area S of Aberdeen, the Mearns, where he 
was born and brought up. Under his real name 
he wrote Stained Radiance 1930 and Spartacus
1933.
