1378-1455. Italian sculptor and goldsmith. In 1401 he won the commission for a pair of gilded bronze doors for Florence's baptistry. He produced a second pair (1425-52), the Gates of Paradise, one of the masterpieces of the Early Italian Renaissance. They show sophisticated composition and use of perspective. He also wrote Commentarii/Commentaries c. 1450, a mixture of art history, manual, and autobiography.
