1898-1937. US composer, who wrote the tone
poem An American in Paris 1928, Rhapsody in
Blue 1924, and the opera Porgy and Bess 1935,
in which he incorporated the essentials of
jazz. He also wrote popular songs with his
brother, the lyricist Ira Gershwin
(1896-1983).
