1895- . (born Gerhardi) British novelist,
born in Russia. His novels include Futility
and The Polyglots, which draws on his Russian
upbringing. Born in St Petersburg, Russia,
Gerhardie was the son of an English landowner
who had left for Russia in the 1860s to run a
cotton mill. Gerhardie left Russia during
World War I and studied at Oxford.
