1942- . Lebanese politician, a Maronite
Christian; president 1982-88. He succeeded
his brother, president-elect Bechir Gemayel,
on his assassination on 14 Sept 1982. The
Lebanese parliament was unable to agree on a
successor when his term expired, so separate
governments were formed under rival Christian
and Muslim leaders.
