1929- . US physicist. In 1964 he formulated
the theory of the quark as the fundamental
constituent of all matter, and smallest
particle in the universe. He was R A Millikan
professor of theoretical physics at the
California Institute of Technology from 1967.
In 1969 he was awarded a Nobel prize for his
work on elementary particles and their
interaction.
