1882-1945. German physicist who produced the
Geiger counter. After studying in Germany, he
spent the period 1907-12 in Manchester,
England, working with Ernest Rutherford. In
1908 they designed an instrument to detect
alpha particles, which was refined and made
more powerful to produce the Geiger counter
in the 1920s.
