Polish port; population (1985) 467,000. Oil
is refined, and textiles, televisions, and
fertilizers are produced. In the 1980s there
were repeated anti-government strikes at the
Lenin shipyards. Formerly a member of the
Hanseatic League, it was in almost continuous
Prussian possession 1793-1919, when it again
became a free city under the protection of
the League of Nations. Annexed by Germany
1939, it reverted to Poland 1945, when the
churches and old merchant houses were
restored.
