1937- . US scientist who, with the French
scientist Luc Montagnier (1932- -),
discovered the AIDS virus at the Pasteur
Institute, Paris. The Gallo virus, discovered
in 1984, has been alleged to have been
accidentally contaminated by samples of a
virus discovered in 1983 by Montagnier, who
gave them to Gallo for research at the
National Cancer Institute near Washington DC,
USA.
