Memory aids for the directions of the
magnetic field, current, and motion in an
electric generator or motor, using one's
fingers. The three directions are represented
by the thumb (for motion), forefinger (for
field) and second finger (current), all held
at right angles to each other. The right hand
is used for generators and the left for
motors. They were named after the English
physicist John Fleming.
