1821-1880. French novelist, author of Madame Bovary 1857. He entered Paris literary circles 1840, but in 1846 moved to Rouen, where he remained for the rest of his life. Salammbo 1862 earned him the Legion of Honour 1866, and was followed by L'Education sentimentale/Sentimental Education 1869, and La Tentation de Saint Antoine/The Temptation of St Anthony 1874. Flaubert also wrote the short stories Trois contes/Three Tales 1877.
