1884-1951. US film director; the father of documentary film-making. He exerted great influence through his pioneer documentary of Inuit (Eskimo) life, Nanook of the North 1922, a critical and commercial success. Later films include Moana 1926, a South Seas documentary; Man of Aran 1934, Elephant Boy 1936, The Lands 1942, and the Standard Oil-sponsored Louisiana Story 1948.
