1805-1865. British vice-admiral and
meteorologist. In 1828 he succeeded to the
command of HMS Beagle, then engaged on a
survey of the Patagonian coast of South
America, and in 1831 was accompanied by the
naturalist Charles Darwin on a five-year
survey. In 1843-45 he was governor of New
Zealand.
