c. 1469-1535. English bishop, created bishop
of Rochester 1504. He was an enthusiastic
supporter of the revival in the study of
Greek, and a friend of the humanists Thomas
More and Desiderius Erasmus. In 1535 he was
tried on a charge of denying the royal
supremacy of Henry VIII and beheaded.
