1905- . US Democratic politician. He was
responsible for the Fulbright Act 1946 which
provided grants for thousands of Americans to
study overseas and for overseas students to
enter the USA; he had studied at Oxford, UK,
on a Rhodes scholarship. He chaired the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee 1959-74,
and was a strong internationalist and
supporter of the United Nations.
