1886-1982. German zoologist, founder with
Konrad Lorenz of ethology, the study of
animal behaviour. He specialized in bees,
discovering how they communicate the location
of sources of nectar by movements called
`dances'. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for
Medicine 1973 together with Konrad Lorenz and
Nikolaas Tinbergen.
