1740-1807. English archaeologist, a
pioneering discoverer of Old Stone Age
(Palaeolithic) tools in association with
large extinct animals at Hoxne, Suffolk, in
1790. He suggested (long before Charles
Darwin) that they predated the conventional
biblical timescale. Frere was high sheriff of
Suffolk and member of Parliament for Norwich.
