Industrial town in the state of Brandenburg,
Federal Republic of Germany, 80 km/50 mi SE
of Berlin; population (1990) 87,000. Former
capital of the East German district of
Frankfurt 1952-90. It is linked by the river
Oder and its canals to the rivers Vistula and
Elbe. Industries include semiconductors,
chemicals, engineering, paper, and leather.
