1877-1957. German explorer who travelled
extensively in Central Asia, but is
remembered for his expedition into the
Weddell Sea of Antarctica, where his ship
became ice-bound for a whole winter. He
landed a party and built a hut on the
floating ice shelf, which eventually broke up
and floated northwards.
