1918-1988. US physicist whose work provided the foundations for quantum electrodynamics. For his work on the theory of radiation he was awarded a share of the Nobel Prize for Physics 1965. As a member of the committee investigating the Challenger space-shuttle disaster 1986, he demonstrated the lethal faults in the rubber seals on the shuttle's booster rocket. Towards the end of his life he became widely known for his revealing autobiography Surely you're Joking Mr Feynman!
