c. 1536-c. 1604. Spanish explorer and
navigator. As a pilot on the Pacific coast of
South America 1563, he reached the islands
off the coast of Chile that now bear his
name. Alexander Selkirk was later marooned on
one of these islands, and his life story
formed the basis of Daniel Defoe's Robinson
Crusoe.
