1900-1989. Egyptian architect. In his work at
the village of New Gouma in Upper Egypt he
demonstrated the value of native building
technology and natural materials in solving
contemporary housing problems. This, together
with his book The Architecture of the Poor
1973, influenced the growth of community
architecture enabling people to work directly
with architects in building their homes.
