1874-1958. Anglo-French aviation pioneer. He
designed a biplane 1907-08 and in 1909 flew a
record distance of 160 km/100 mi. With his
brother Maurice Farman (1878-1964), he
founded an aircraft works at Billancourt,
supplying the army in France and other
countries. The UK also made use of Farman's
inventions, for example, air-screw reduction
gears, in World War II.
