1876-1946. Spanish composer. Born in Cadiz,
he lived in France, where he was influenced
by the Impressionist composers Claude Debussy
and Maurice Ravel. His opera La vida
breve/Brief Life 1905 (performed 1913) was
followed by the ballets El amor brujo/Love
the Magician 1915 and El sombrero de tres
picos/The Three-Cornered Hat 1919, and his
most ambitious concert work, Noches en los
jardines de Espana/Nights in the Gardens of
Spain 1916. The folk idiom of southern Spain
is an integral part of his compositions. He
also wrote songs and pieces for piano and
