1897-1985. US virologist. With Thomas Weller
and Frederick Robbins, he discovered the
ability of the polio virus to grow in
cultures of various tissues, which led to the
perfection of an effective vaccine. The three
were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine
1954. Enders also succeeded in isolating the
measles virus.
