1906-1984. English poet and critic, born in
Yorkshire. He was professor of English
literature at Tokyo and Beijing (Peking), and
from 1953-71 at Sheffield University. His
critical work examined the potential variety
of meaning in poetry, as in Seven Types of
Ambiguity 1930 and The Structure of Complex
Words 1951. His verse was published in
Collected Poems 1955.
