Test designed to select children for grammar
school education in the UK, at the time when
local authorities provided separate grammar,
secondary modern, and occasionally technical
schools for children over the age of 11. The
examination became defunct on the
introduction of comprehensive schools in
Scotland, Wales, and most of England during
the 1960s and 1970s, although certain
education authorities retain the selective
system and the Eleven Plus.
