System for monitoring people on remand
(charged with a crime but released on bail).
Pioneered in the USA, electronic tagging was
tested in the UK in 1989 in Nottingham.
Volunteers were fitted with a tamper-proof
anklet or `tag', and their home with a
special receiver-dialling unit. If the person
moved out of the range of the unit, a signal
would be transmitted to a central computer.
