1858-1930. Dutch bacteriologist. He
identified vitamin B1 deficiency as the cause
of the disease beriberi, and pioneered the
recognition of vitamins as essential to
health. He shared the 1929 Nobel Prize for
Medicine with Frederick Hopkins.
