1854-1915. German bacteriologist and
immunologist who developed the first cure for
syphilis. He developed the arsenic compounds,
in particular Salvarsan, used in the
treatment of syphilis before the discovery of
antibiotics. He shared the 1908 Nobel Prize
for Medicine with Ilya Mechnikov (1845-1916)
for his work on immunity.
