1760-1794. French revolutionary, who summoned
the mob to arms on 12 July 1789, so
precipitating the revolt that culminated in
the storming of the Bastille. A prominent
Jacobin, he was elected to the National
Convention 1792. His Histoire des Brissotins
was largely responsible for the overthrow of
the Girondins, but shortly after he was sent
to the guillotine as too moderate.
