1884-1966. Dutch physicist. A pioneer of 
X-ray powder crystallography, he also worked 
on polar molecules, dipole moments, and 
molecular structure. In 1940, he went to the 
USA where he was professor of chemistry at 
Cornell University 1940-52. He was awarded 
the 1936 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
