1834-1900. German engineer who pioneered the 
modern car. In 1886 he produced his first 
motor vehicle and a motor-bicycle. He later 
joined forces with Karl Benz and was one of 
the pioneers of the high-speed four-stroke 
petrol engine. Daimler, born in Wurttemberg, 
had engineering experience at the Whitworth 
works, Manchester, England, before joining 
N A Otto of Cologne in the production of an
internal-combustion gas engine 1872.
