1785-1838. French chemist and physicist who,
along with Petit, discovered in 1819 the law
that, for many elements solid at room
temperature, the product of the atomic weight
and specific heat capacity is approximately
constant. He had earlier, in 1811, and at the
cost of an eye, discovered the explosive
nitrogen trichloride.
