1901-1981. French-US microbiologist who
studied soil microorganisms and became
interested in their antibacterial properties.
The antibacterials he discovered had limited
therapeutic use since they were toxic.
However, he opened up a new field of research
that eventually led to the discovery of such
major drugs as penicillin and streptomycin.
